π Ration Rice
Ginger Brown Rice β’ Long-Burn Fuel
White rice burns fast and spikes you β it's a sugar rush in a bowl. Brown rice is the slow-burn
ration: the fiber makes your body work for the energy, so it releases steady over hours instead
of all at once. Add ginger and it stops tasting like a compromise. This is the base layer
under Bunker Beans, beside Fallout Salmon Packs, or eaten alone when supplies run thin.
β Required Supplies:
- 2 rice-cooker cups long-grain brown rice
- 1 Tbsp soy sauce
- 2 Tbsp sake (1 Tbsp as the recipe's sake + 1 Tbsp standing in for mirin)
- 1 tsp sugar (the other half of the mirin substitute)
- ΒΌ tsp salt
- Water β measured so the seasonings + water total 2ΒΌ cups
- 1Β½β2 inches fresh ginger (use less if you want it milder)
- Optional: ~4 oz extra-firm tofu, cubed and pan-fried golden (stands in for aburaage)
- A rice cooker with a Brown Rice setting
π§ Preparation Protocol:
STEP 1: Put the rice in the cooker pot. Cover with water, swirl with your hand,
and pour off the cloudy water. Repeat 2β3 times until the water runs mostly clear, then
drain well.
STEP 2: In a measuring cup, combine the soy sauce, sake, sugar, and salt. Add
water until the total liquid measures 2ΒΌ cups, then pour it all into the pot and stir.
STEP 3: Scatter the ginger (and tofu, if using) over the top. Do not stir it in
β the rice won't cook evenly otherwise.
STEP 4: Let it soak 20β30 minutes (set a timer β the grains hydrate and cook more
evenly). Then close the lid, select the Brown Rice setting, and start.
STEP 5: When it finishes, don't open the lid β rest 10 minutes. Then fluff with
the rice paddle, folding the ginger through. Do not skip the rest β it's when the grains
finish setting up.
β SURVIVAL NOTE: The fiber in brown rice slows glucose absorption β steady energy for a
long patrol instead of a spike and a crash. For survivors managing blood sugar, this is the
correct rice. Portion it like fuel, not like filler: about a fist-sized serving per meal.
